1) Panama City and around

Franzi and I started our trip to Panama, Costa Rica and Nicaragua on Saturday, 16th of November :)
A KLM flight brought us from Frankfurt to Amsterdam and another directly to Panama City. Quite a distance but thanks to the shift in timezones we arrived at the same day. We tried to take the local bus into the city, but didn't manage to find it in the dark and thus took a taxi into the city where we stayed at Mamallena hostel. Unfortunately, this was to be the least pleasant stay during our whole trip as the room stank mold. There was not much we did the first day as we were tired... just a small walk around the neighborhood. The next morning we took a bus to the Albrook Terminal where most of the buses depart. That was when we found out that Panama City requires you to buy a chip card at this terminal to use the buses... however, the first ride was for free thanks to the friendly bus driver^^ Quickly we could make use of the Spanish we learned during the last weeks and months. We took a bus to the locks of Panama Canal. However, we missed it and jumped off at the National Park Summit. We were quite happy about our mistakes when we saw all the lovely animals that are held here once they were rescued from smugglers. It must be not too often that travelers come here as a group of school kids was happy to see and ask us about our reasons to come. They filmed the interview for their class... seems like I'll be part of some class movie project :P
After our first spots of middle-american fauna, we took a taxi to the Miraflores locks as we didn't really know when another bus would show up :/ The locks are huge, but whoever has seen locks won't be surprised. They work like any, but are simply huge. Not bad but neither exciting to see a cruiser ship passing the locks.
Back in Panama City we visited Casco Viejo. The only place in the city we found to be lovely... even tho not too much attention is payed to keep it in a good condition... the promenade is nice to walk and the skyline quite pretty to watch, other than that Panama City didn't amaze me. We then took a night bus towards David and a morning (18.11.) bus to Boquete. While waiting for the bus, it was quite bewildering to see tons of Christmas decorations in the Albrook mall - doesn't really suit the tropes :S
